In a special partnership with the City of Michigan City, Indiana, Housing Opportunities is assisting homeowners in that municipality as they work to rehab their current homes. Using funds made available through Community Development Block Grants, up to $20,000 may be made available for
- Improving energy efficiency
- Bringing a house in-line with building codes
- Ensuring home safety
Applicants for this program must meet the following requirements:
- Resident of Michigan City, Indiana
Priority given to the elderly, disabled or those who have children under 5.

Housing Opportunities is developing an owner occupied rehabilitation program for Porter County that includes bringing the home up to current city code, addressing lead based paint issues, making the home accessible, and other rehab issues. There will be twenty families for the first round: ten residents from Valparaiso and ten residents from Portage. We will be taking applications for this program starting November 1 to November 15, 2009. All applications MUST BE MAILED to: Housing Opportunities, Inc., 954 Eastport Centre Drive, Suite A, Valparaiso, IN 46383.
To qualify for this program, applicants must:
- Must be current on their mortgage or not have a mortgage
- Be age 62 or above or have a diagnosed disability
- Have an income at 50% of the area median. For a family of one, the income cannot be over $22,600. For a family of two, the income cannot be over $25,850. Income will be verified if selected for the program.
- Must be living in the home and current with property taxes and homeowner insurance.
This program is limited and will be determine by the date of the postmark on the envelope. NO FAXES, EMAILS or WALK IN applications will be accepted.
