First time homebuyers whose income is less than 80% of the area median income may apply to Housing Opportunities for assistance in paying for the down payment on the construction of a new home, up to an approximate cost of $146,000. To qualify, applicants must meet all of the following criteria:
- Household income may not exceed 80% of the area median income.
- Completion of Homebuyer Education classes (provided free by Housing Opportunities)
- Qualify for a mortgage of at least $100,000 with a mortgage lender approved by Housing Opportunities
- The new home must be constructed in LaPorte, Porter or Starke County, by a builder approved by Housing Opportunities
